As the State of Qatar gears up to host the 2016 UCI Road World Cycling Championships – Doha 2016, the weeklong event from 9th to 16th October, will see international professional riders take to the scenic streets of The Pearl-Qatar, United Development Company's (UDC) award-winning island development.
Organized by the Union Cycliste Internationale, this year marks the first Arab nation to ever host the event, and Doha is set to warmly welcome around 1,000 racers from across 75 countries, fans in the estimation of 30,000 and spectators from all over the world expected to reach in the millions.
Closer to home, the residents of The Pearl-Qatar have gained automatic 'ring-side' access to this sporting occasion. As the highly prestigious and official venue sponsor, The Pearl Island will be a major attraction for the country, as it is widely considered to be an iconic landmark within Qatar.
This annually held competition will feature numerous events, including individual time trials, team time trials, junior races and the elite trails for men and women, as well as the fun-for-all
"Ride of Champions". This race gives the chance for every participant to ride the official Road World Championships course and the opportunity to cross the finish line for their own 'champion moment'.
The course of the race will take in some of the country's key locales such as
Education City and Katara. This consequently will have a bearing on the roads, and as such the whole city is braced for road closures and diversions in order to accommodate for the race efficiently.
Road closures on The Pearl have been scheduled and announced with the timings, but more importantly details of alternative travel and access routes in and out of the Island have been communicated.
As such, and to echo a spirit of public support, residents are encouraged to make use of their access passes for the many spectator boxes around the circuit so to be able to watch the race in key locations. Designated fan zones for residents will house big screen TV's, snacks and beverage, so that a real true experience can be enjoyed by all the family.
During the closure times, there will be golf carts on standby to ferry people to Medina Centrale, alongside a shuttle bus service every 20 minutes, to and from Katara and Doha Exhibition Center. As another means of getting on and off the Island, a water taxi transfer to Katara will be provided – every quarter of the hour -. These transportation are all free of charge and are aimed to ease public congestion during race times.
Having the race here in Qatar will be chronicled as the first in the event's 95-year history, and with the privileged measures put into place for the residents of The Pearl-Qatar, many are rallying in support of being part of this historic moment.
Complimentary movie screenings at Novo Cinemas, discount vouchers for retail outlets, dedicated residents-only hub at Doha Exhibition Center which provides children's entertainment and free refreshments, are all amongst such privileges and measures mentioned.
As The Pearl is home to an eclectic mix of nationalities, this event is sure to reflect the rich cultural make-up of Qatar, and so residents are encouraged to patriotically support their competing country, whilst concurrently cheering Qatar and specifically The Pearl as the host destination.
